Restaurants. Get what you can.

Dress to impress, ask for the rest.

Fancy restaurants are usually much, much cheaper at lunchtime than they are in the evening … again this comes back to the flexibility thing … if you are prepared to do your upmarket eating at mid-day … you can save a fortune.  The deals often take the form of set lunchtime menus … and these can usually be researched online beforehand.  Several restaurant websites (, etc.) exist to highlight special offers … frequently at gourmet restaurants

When making a reservation at a hotel/restaurant … let them know when it is a special occasion – birthday, wedding anniversary, whatever … frequently they will throw in a complimentary gift … we once had the most beautiful bouquet of flowers from the Palazzo Sasso hotel in Ravello, Italy ( this way

Dress smartly, if casually.  Make it look like you fit in … much of getting what you want from hospitality staff is about making easy for them to help you.  Smile.  It never hurts to ask for that upgrade if it is done with charm.  Be gracious if you are unsuccessful … do not take it personally … go with the flow … and try again at a more amenable establishment

TopTable is a good resource to get great value for money. Focus on the 50% off a la carte deals … many of the other “special deals” are no better than you would get if you just walked in off the street

Just back from a trip to Scotland via the Lake District. We booked an overnight stay at the Lodore Falls hotel and were pleased to be offered a voucher for a complimentary bottle of house wine with our pre-booked four-course meal for two. A very acceptable Spanish Red. And as the other wines on the wine list were all £20 and up we were content to stick with our complimentary wine
