Cost-effective rail travel in the land of the rising sun

It is well-known that one of the best bargains in the hugely interesting, but not hugely cheap for tourists destination of Japan is the Japan Rail pass.  In our experience paying the extra for “Green” (first) class is well worthwhile (currently the price for a 7 day “Green” pass is £280, the standard pass is £208.  Compare that with the price differential between first and standard rail tickets in the UK. On one memorable trip through the Japanese Alps from Kyoto to Nagoya we were placed in a specialist “Wideview” sightseeing carriage which had a full width glass screen behind the train driver allowing us to see the track stretching off into the breathtaking scenery just as well as the driver himself.  This was a real champagne moment
