Champagne.

Bulk buy for a bubbly life.

Retailers in the UK forced to compete with the supermarkets’ aggressive marketing will offer good value on champagne from time to time … but that does not mean there is not scope for improvement.  Particularly if you are buying in bulk for a special occasion.  We have found one UK retailer can be persuaded to provide considerable extra discounts when you buy in greater quantities than 6 cases.  And will allow “sale or return”. However given that champagne can be stored for considerable periods, and makes a welcome gift at any time … we have never had the heart to return our hard-bargained-for champagne.

On one occasion a store manager was proving inflexible about pricing when we pointed out the same brand of champagne could be obtained considerably cheaper in France.  The manager agreed that the wine could be purchased considerably more cheaply in France … indeed that the saving would pay for a nice weekend break away for 2 people including a decent hotel and a nice dinner … when he countered that this would mean actually taking the trip to France, Tracey responded “And your point is? Why wouldn’t we want a nice weekend in France”.  At this stage he capitulated and offered us a very good price in the UK … so we bought from him

Majestic currently offer a very drinkable non-vintage Nicolas Feuillatte NV Champagne at £18 per bottle. If you want to splash out they currently have Bollinger Special Cuvée NV Champagne at £32 per bottle (or £30 if you buy six). Both these are favourites of ours

Current Majestic favourite is Tattenger at £26 per bottle (minimum of two) … 🙂

Majestic Wine is currently offering Nicolas Feuillatte NV Champagne at £15 — which we could not refuse. Had we been feeling a little more flush with cash we would also have taken advantage of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé NV Champagne at £45 per bottle
